Creating comfort in a new home is key to positive next steps.
Establishing a home requires basics such as linens, towels, kitchen utensils, dishes, glasses, pots, pans, laundry/dish/toilet/window cleaners, rags, buckets, garbage cans and bags, to name a few. The initial cost can easily exceed $250. This can be overwhelming if you have limited experience with independent home maintenance, have not been gifted, or did not have the ability to gather the tools and supplies needed to set up and care for a home. Typically, people in these situations have experienced a home fire or flood; were recently unhoused; are beginning self-sustained recovery; aged out of foster care; were previously incarcerated; or left an unhealthy/violent relationship. Beginning a new life situation with tools supporting “normalcy” increases the likelihood of success.
Christian Help provides housewarming baskets and starter kits for individuals in transition through its Home Pack program. We work with area case managers in housing services, schools, and other agencies for referrals. Pulling from product donations and negotiating with vendors, we can provide home basics, as well as small appliances, to participants at no charge. In addition, Christian Help can provide food and personal hygiene needs to sustain them in this phase of their life. Providing these items eases the individual’s financial burden; helps the placing agency; and signals concern for the person. Use of the Home Packs creates a healthy living situation, maintains property value, and improves personal confidence. This is Christian Help’s goal – providing options for success.
